Disease Overview

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic kidney disease involves a gradual loss of kidney function over a period of months or years. Your kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from your blood, which are then excreted in your urine. When CKD reaches an advanced stage, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes can build up in your body.

In the early stages, you may have few signs or symptoms. The disease may not become apparent until your kidney function is significantly impaired. Treatment usually focuses on slowing the progression of kidney damage by controlling the underlying cause.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Changes in urine output

  • Swelling of feet and ankles

  • High blood pressure
